Yes, during the NHI Project medications will be provided at authorized pharmacies enrolled with NHI. There is a basic list of medications available-including treatment for the most important health problems. A general practitioner or an authorized specialist must refer all prescriptions.
How do I get laboratory and other diagnostic tests under NHI?
Your general practitioner must see you and determine that you need a lab exam or other diagnostic tests. The GP will give you a referral and then you will select the lab or diagnostic center from the list of authorized NHI providers. Once at the NHI provider, you will present your NHI referral and receive treatment, with no charges.

Where did the idea of National Health Insurance come from?
NHI, or National Health Insurance is a strategy developed by the Government, as part of its Health Sector Reform program, to provide health care services to all residents of Belize. The strategy is derived from the need to provide an improved, equitable and sustainable system of health care to the people of Belize. It is an option for financing the health care of Belize's population.
Will National Health Insurance also be free?
No, a National Health Insurance would have to be paid for in some way. The project will be used to fine-tune the strategy to finance NHI.
Why doesn't Social Security get its own doctors and hospital?
Social Security has not invested in its own Doctors and Hospital because the Scheme was not so structured. The Social Security contributions are not sufficient to meet the cost. Medical Treatment under the Social Security Scheme is for Employment Injuries only; the Scheme does not provide the treatment, it pays for the treatment of injured insured contributors who are working.
