The Ride Across Belize is a Social Security Board staff initiative to assist in community efforts as it relates to the development of Belize. Starting in 2004 and every year thereafter, the staff organizes the ride in collaboration with the cycling association and cycling enthusiasts as a means to raise funds for worthy causes. Riders peddle their bikes from the north to the deep south of Belize.
The Social Security Board solicits financial or in kind contributions from business entities. The Board of Directors of the Social Security Board also makes a considerable donation matching any amount collected dollar for dollar. The cyclists that participate are also required to pay a $25.00 registration fee for each of the four stages of the ride. This money however, goes toward purchasing servicing materials needed for the ride.
In 2004, the Ride Across Belize, rode in the fight against HIV/AIDS and monies raised were donated to the National AIDS Commission and the Alliance Against AIDS.
In 2005, the ride was in support of youth organizations and the Youth Hostel and the Stella Maris School benefited from the proceeds.
In 2006, the ride was dedicated to the upkeep of the only mental health institution in the country, the Rockview Psychiatric Hospital.
In 2007, the ride supported two very distinguished organizations; Haven House in its ongoing support for women affected by domestic violence and the Dangriga Chapter of the Help Age Organization that looks after the disadvantaged elderly population.
In 2008, the ride was in support of Marla’s House of Hope, the Belize Volunteer Blood Donor’s Association, and the Kidney Association of Belize.
In 2009, the Ride Across Belize fund raiser was in support of the Belize National Cancer Society, the Belmopan Cancer Society and the Nurse’s Association of Belize.
The Social Security Board has an ongoing commitment to foster community awareness and concern for those whose situation is less than ideal. The Board takes this opportunity to invite and encourage other organizations to join in and get involved in giving back to the community.
The Social Security Board also appeals to the Belizean public and business community to give generously and support such a worthy cause.
